The path to progress isn’t easy, nor can it be taken for granted. Our communities face deep inequalities and access to decent work, a liveable income, health care, education and secure homes is getting worse. We work to make sure that communities across Ireland have what they need to stop far right groups trying to sow division on these issues.
Our Work
- We support communities directly impacted by attempts from far right actors to sow division
- We build effective rapid responses as and when it is needed to help local communities stop hate activity in its tracks
- We nurture community spaces for impacted people and communities to speak out and get support
- We bring communities together to build a better understanding of far right activity and develop and share resources to counter hate
Our Impact
Rapid Responses: Since Autumn 2021, Hope and Courage Collective has engaged twelve communities, both geographical and community based to rapidly respond to hate and far right activity. In critical moments we provided advice directly to people on the ground, making recommendations on de-escalation strategies and responses.
Cross Community Responses: In April 2022, in the wake of the murder of two gay men, Hope and Courage Collective supported communities directly impacted by far right hate. We worked directly with members of both the Muslim and LGBTI+ communities to publicly come together at a vigil and de-escalate attempts to inflame Islamophobia.
Community Empowerment: Hope and Courage Collective is working intensely with three geographical communities devising medium and long term strategies to build community knowledge, solidarity and resilience to respond quickly to far right activity in their communities.
“Working with HACC in my local community has been so impactful, I’m so grateful to have had them work with me and the neighbourhood to empower us all”

Need our support?
There are significant knowledge gaps within and across many communities, about the ideas, actions and methods of far right activity, and how we as a society can effectively respond to this. We therefore place community education and awareness at the heart of our work.
Our Work
- We run regular workshops on a range of themes and issues relating to far right activism and its impacts and harm
- We publish evidence-based research and analysis about the latest emerging trends around far right activity in Ireland
- We train and inform a wide range of actors about the reality of this activity and how best to take action
Our Impact
Analysing Far Right Activity: Hope and Courage Collective identified how far right activity and tactics are adapted and are shifting in real time. We are able to communicate at speed to relevant people and communities when and where the focus is. This has meant that key stakeholders have been able to respond strategically, rather than react to deliberate attempts to bait and escalate tensions.
Community Education: Hope and Courage Collective have developed training for communities to recognise and respond to far right attempts at disrupting and causing harm. In 2022 we held six training workshops with communities and community workers across Ireland. In partnership with Community Work Ireland (CWI) we developed a response guide for communities in tackling hate and division. This guide has been disseminated to over 700 community workers across Ireland and shared with dozens of activists and communities facing the threat of far right ideas and activity in their localities.
Training and Workshops: In 2022, Hope and Courage Collective hosted thirteen training events and seminars on topics related to the far right organization. Our seminars include both national and international expertise to ensure access to real-time and up-to-date information and analysis.
Community collaborations: In 2022 we helped design and deliver a cross-community event in Northern Ireland in collaboration with Social Change Initiative(SCI), Hope Not Hate and Trademark Belfast. The conference brought together community workers, trade unionists, civil society organisations and grassroots campaigns to address fears and concerns around far right activity in the region, as part of SCI’s Tackling Extremism project. A video output from the event can be found here
